The challenge

Healthy rivers are essential to human life, they provide us with drinking water, they are home to wildlife, and they provide recreational spaces for our health and wellbeing. However, every year, more than 11 million tons of plastic end up in our oceans, and much of that waste originated from our rivers. The Chao Phraya river in Bangkok is the most polluted river in Thailand, with thousands of tons of waste pouring into Thailand’s oceans daily.

The solution

Together with everwave, the Audi Environmental Foundation, the Ferry Porsche Foundation, and local partners the TerraCycle Thai Foundation, we set out on a comprehensive campaign against the pollution of the Chao Phraya river to prevent marine litter from occurring in the first place. The project did this through four pillars:

Waste Collection

Through waste collection boats and the use of artificial intelligence to detect, analyse, sort and safely dispose of waste.

Local Employment

Long-term jobs created as part of the boat operations team.

School Outreach and Education Programme

New scheme set-up to raise pupil’s awareness on plastic pollution and how to manage waste. Pupils were also given the opportunity to visit the boat and sorting facility.

Public Inspiration

Awareness campaigns through social media and events carried out throughout the project.

The impact

Through these four pillars, the project continues to help rid the Chao Phraya river of harmful plastic rubbish, and ultimately reduce the likelihood of waste entering our oceans.

Our partnership (2024/25) aims to:

- Collect over 20 tons of waste per month from the river.

- Extend the cleanup sites to 10 collection points along the river where the boat can collect the waste.

- Have the material recovery centre (sorting facility) fully operational.

- Kickstart a brand new educational programme in local schools.
